The claim
“I rejected every fancy way to make money online: Youtube, Personal branding, Dropshipping, freelancing. And started selling simple $19 PDFs, made $50k last month.”
@Manu_Sisti, 1 October 2026, 93,364 views1
“I’ve failed at AirBnB, YouTube, and Dropshipping. But in the last 11 months, I’ve made $700,000 selling a simple $19 PDF.”
@TommiPedruzzi, 20 September 2026, 223,375 views1
A “digital product” is a file sold as a download, such as an ebook or a template. The seller puts it on a checkout platform such as Gumroad, which keeps a fee, and has to bring the buyers1. The quoted opening lines do not say where the PDF is sold; we did not open the threads. Both authors’ profiles point to publishing books on Amazon52. This page tests the method as if the PDF were sold direct. It does not judge the people who tweeted.
The sums
Sales needed each month through the seller’s own Gumroad link, before adverts, tools, refunds and tax (our sums)2:
| Kept per month | $19 PDF | $500 ebook |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | 64 | 3 |
| $10,000 | 635 | 23 |
| $50,000 | about 3,050 | about 111 |
A low price needs volume and a high price needs trust.
The best-documented case on X is Daniel Vassallo’s own unaudited report. His second product was a course on building a Twitter audience14. He made about $3 of sales per 1,000 times a tweet was shown (our estimate)13. At that rate $10,000 a month needs about 3.3 million views a month (our estimate)13.
What happens to most people who try
Gumroad published a full count for 2020, before AI-written products, from its own records. It is the only full-year count we found5. Of 45,917 creators who earned anything, “the median creator made only $70 in 2020”5. Median means the middle creator. About 17% earned at least $1,000 and about 4% earned at least $10,000 (our sums)5. People who listed a product and sold nothing are not counted, so the true shares are lower5. $10,000 a month is $120,000 a year: 179 of the 45,917, about 0.4%, made $100,000 or more5.
The platform does not supply buyers to a newcomer: Gumroad’s marketplace is closed until an account has $100 of genuine sales and has passed a review75.
We found no evidenced case of a new account earning five figures a month from an AI-written PDF, though our search was limited.
The upside
- Easlo, Notion templates: $239,000 in 2022. Business Insider wrote that it “verified his revenue with documentation”61. The rest is his own account: he started with no audience, gave templates away first, and made over $25,000 in his first eight months6162. By the end of 2022 he had over 211,000 Twitter followers, and his tweets also teach audience growth61.
- Brian Hahn, a patent attorney, bar-exam study outlines: $1 million over about ten years. He writes that Gumroad told him the total63.
On Gumroad in 2020 the top tenth of earning creators averaged about $28,000, and entering that group took roughly $2,400. The top hundredth averaged about $185,000 (all our estimates)5.
Our estimate, not a measured figure: with no particular expertise, no audience and an AI-written general PDF, nothing to under $100 in a year52223. With real expertise and months of useful free posting first, a few hundred to a few thousand dollars in the first year is plausible52067. Six figures a year took an audience built first, a trusted credential or many years in every case we found146163.
What it takes to compete
Those who succeed bring their own buyers:
- An audience built before the product. Vassallo had a bit over 12,000 Twitter followers first, and wrote that without them “I’m almost certain I wouldn’t have sold any”14.
- Or a credential and a narrow group of buyers, as with Hahn63.
- An email list. In Gumroad’s unrepresentative survey, 60% of higher earners kept one, against 31% of the rest5.
- A subject people already pay for, not a guide to getting rich1463.
In a report covering 2025, the checkout platform Stan said sellers with under 1,000 followers averaged $89 a month in sales, and those with 100,000 or more averaged $1,37867. These are averages from Stan’s own marketing report, and the typical seller earns less67.
Cash is not the barrier: Gumroad has no monthly fee, and an email list is free to start283. The costly mistake is adverts, where a $19 PDF loses about $11 to $23 a sale at benchmark costs (our sum)12.
How to tell early: watch for three or four genuine sales adding up to $100, the line Gumroad’s review typically needs7576.
Who else makes money from it
The platforms are paid on every sale: Gumroad keeps about 17% of a $19 sale (our sum)2.
Of our 54 tweets, 39 steer the reader to a course, a training video, a community, a tool or a direct message (approximate count)1. The profiles of the two accounts quoted above link to the same free workshop about publishing books on Amazon52. That shows what the profiles link to, not whether the claims are true.
