The claim
“I scaled my agency from 0-$54,000/mo. All I did was send automated emails at scale. But it took 8 draining months to build.”
@yassin_baum, 6 April 2024, 39,265 views1
A cold outreach agency, or lead gen agency, emails strangers and books sales meetings for a client, who pays a fixed monthly fee (a retainer). We have not checked the $54,000 figure: we read the tweet’s text only1.
The claims are old: 24 of the 52 tweets we collected date from 2021 to 20231. In one agency’s own count, the share of contacts who replied fell from 2.36% in April 2025 to 0.56% in August 2026, while its own sending grew 27-fold86.
The sums
Agencies that publish prices mostly charge a few thousand dollars a month per client: from $2,400 at one, $4,500 at another24. So at full prices the tweeted sums need few clients (our sums).
| Income claimed | Clients needed at $2,400 to $3,000 a month |
|---|---|
| $10,000 a month1 | about 4 |
| $54,000 a month1 | 18 to 23 |
One established agency, Sales.co, counted its own campaign to find clients: 235,941 emails led to 143 booked calls and 7 paying customers85. That is about 33,700 emails per paying client (our sum)85.
What happens to most people who try
Nobody knows. No study, survey or platform says what share of starters ever sign a client. That is a gap, not a sign that failures are rare.
One agency, by its own account under a year old, has payment-verified revenue (read from its payment processor): $41,069 to 7 October 2026, about $4,900 a month over eight full months (our sum)40. Its best month was $7,400 and September brought $899; this is revenue, not profit40.
A second such agency, founded in July 2023, took $133,308 in the last 12 months, about $11,000 a month (our sum)39. Its revenue fell four months running, from $13,634 in May 2026 to $7,023 in September39.
The upside
Outsiders have checked a few figures.
- Audited. Sopro, a British agency, had revenue (turnover) of £13.2 million in 2024, about eight years after it was set up (our sum), with an average of 250 employees and a loss after tax3891.
- Payment-verified. The agency founded in July 2023 has taken $358,617 in all39.
The faster stories are the operators’ own and unchecked. ColdIQ says it went from a side project in January 2023, with a first client at $3,000 a month, to over $300,000 a month by January 202577. It runs a community for agency owners79. Three other founders report $6,000 a month after less than a year (2021)47, $10,500 in month three (2021)43, and $10,000 a month four or five months in45. Of the two 2021 agencies, one web address now shows a different business and our agents could not open the other; we do not know whether either still trades105106.
For a starter who has already sold or run a business and knows one group of buyers well, our estimate of a good result is roughly $2,000 to $10,000 a month of uneven revenue in the first year, before tool costs and your own hours. The top of that range rests on founders’ own accounts. Most starters probably do worse, because people with poor results rarely publish them. We found no payment-verified case of $10,000 a month within 60 days.
What it takes to compete
The four founders who published their story share these, by their own account. We do not know the background of whoever runs either payment-verified agency3940. We found no account from anyone who gave up, so this is not a tested recipe.
- One group of buyers you know well, before starting. One founder cold-emailed about 100 startup founders like himself, free at first4344; ColdIQ’s first client came from its founder’s own readers77.
- Sales or business experience. All four had it43454777.
- A narrow target. In Sales.co’s data, 0.48% of contacts at companies with 1 to 10 employees replied with interest, against 0.07% at companies with 1,001 to 5,00085.
- Working free or cheap at first. Two founders ran free campaigns first, then charged $500 a month4445.
- Months without income. The verified new agency’s first payment came three to four months after its stated founding40.
- Sending only where the rules allow. US law permits cold email to businesses under set rules; Germany requires prior consent2832.
Tools are the small cost: roughly $170 to $370 a month for each client served (our estimate).
To tell early: by about month 4, has anyone paid you? In every case above, someone had404345. Count replies showing interest per 1,000 new contacts: about 1 is the middle of Sales.co’s campaigns, and 5 or more is its top quarter85.
Who else makes money from it
Of the 52 tweets, 43 by our labels lead to a free guide, a course, coaching, a community, a paid challenge or the author’s own agency or software1. No coaching programme we found publishes how many buyers end up with paying clients.
Sending tools cost $39 to $379 a month whether or not the buyer signs a client1415.
