Small software products built alone

Also sold as “Micro-SaaS and vibe-coded apps”

VerdictPays a patient few

It pays a minority: builders who already reach their buyers, keep their customers and keep at it for years. About 1 in 22 subscription apps that charge reaches $10,000 a month within two years; the median earns about $72 a month after a year.

The claim

“Bro vibe coded a $20k MRR app in 14 days.”

“SaaS” is software paid for by subscription. “Vibe coding” means having an AI tool write the code. MRR, monthly recurring revenue, is the price times the number paying this month, before fees, costs and tax. We checked what became of the second tweet’s goal against payment records; see The upside. This page judges the scheme, not the people who tweeted. We use “scheme” in the neutral sense of a plan; it does not mean the method or anyone quoted is dishonest.

The sums

The most common monthly price across more than 115,000 subscription apps is $106. At that price, $10,000 a month needs 1,071 paying subscribers on the web or 1,177 in an app store, after payment or app-store fees (our sums)24.

If 2% of downloads end up paying (our estimate), 1,177 payers needs about 59,000 downloads6. On monthly app plans, 6% to 14% of subscribers still pay after a year, so an MRR figure describes one month6.

Buying those downloads with ads loses money at median (middle) numbers: a US subscriber costs about $67 to $130 on Apple’s ad system (our sums); the median payer on Apple’s store worldwide brings in about $23 (different samples, so rough)614.

What happens to most people who try

Among newly launched subscription apps, 17.3% reach $1,000 in monthly revenue within two years and 4.6% reach $10,000: about 1 in 6 and about 1 in 226. The median app earns about $72 a month a year after launch6. These count apps, not people, and include companies’ apps6.

Web figures come from TrustMRR, a public list that reads money received, not profit, from the founder’s payment account16. Two outside analyses of it put the median at $169 and $145 a month. One is by a forum user, the other by a company selling a database of software ideas; we recomputed neither1011. No sample counts people who never finished or never charged.

Our estimate: a capable newcomer’s first product most likely earns between nothing and about $100 a month after a year.

The upside

One year after launch, the top quarter of subscription apps earns above $429 a month and the top tenth above $2,5746. Among listed web products of every age with revenue, that company’s analysis puts the top quarter above $894 a month, the top tenth above $5,107, and says 23.6% reach $1,000 a month11.

Two payment-verified outcomes:

About 50 of the 15,000-plus listings TrustMRR reports show $41,000 a month or more: about 1 in 300 (our sum)16.

Our estimate of a good result a year in, for a product that charges: roughly $430 to $900 a month. A very good one: roughly $2,500 to $5,000611.

What it takes to compete

Stripe, using data from a service it sells, compared the top tenth of solo founders with the middle. All had paid to set up a US company58. The top tenth:

Also:

Tools cost about $800 to $2,300 a year (our estimate)15. The larger cost is time: about 21 months to nearly six years in the verified cases1962.

Early tests: strangers pay soon after launch, and first-month customers pay again. The commonest reported failure is sign-ups without payments26.

Who else makes money from it

Of our 52 tweets, 31 lead to something (our labels): the author’s own app, a paid list, a service, a tool, or a link sent on request1.

Starter Story, which posted the first tweet, sells builders a $395 programme; its page shows customer testimonials but no figures for how buyers do overall21. Marc Lou runs TrustMRR169. Of the $3,212,777 of verified revenue on his own page on 7 October 2026, about two thirds (our sum) came from a starter code kit and a coding course sold to would-be builders17.
